the art of play

Forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair. (Kalhil Gibran)

BCA Rendez-Vous
Winter Cove, Saturna Island
On the August long-weekend, we went to the BCA Goodbye Rendez-Vous. I have mentioned the Bluewater Cruising Association before, it is meant as a resource for people who want to go offshore. We're not unique in our sailing group, there are 37 boats heading south this year alone! I was rather surprised, apparently it's a record number. In our day-to-day life, we tend to stand out for dropping out of the rat-race and choosing to live the life of sea-gypsies. We still stand out in BCA, but only because we are this year's youngest crew to leave Canadian shores. We figure, why wait? We are smart. We are hard-working. We love adventure. We love sailing.

Quiet time with a sketchbook
Interestingly, all of the experienced offshore sailors we know, have repeated the same mantra: "Go when you're young. Don't wait!" We like that advice. I don't want to pay the price of "someday in the future" I'll get to go on adventures. Anyone who knows us, knows we are not afraid of hard work. Lord knows, we are pros at that. But we also love to play. I've often witnessed adults lose their ability to do things simply for the pleasure of it. Everything has to have a purpose. Suffer now so you can have fun later. How many times have I heard, "I don't have time." or "I'm too busy." Too busy for pleasure?

We do not stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing. (G.B. Shaw)

Our friend KK is coming aboard,
time to bake a Wacky Cake!
Editor's note: I should add that we had to learn some of this the hard way. One does not have to stay trapped in a situation, there is always a way out. Sometimes one needs a kick in the ass, but realizing that how we choose to live, is in fact, really up to us was the best realization. Turns out, we really like to play! Of course, it doesn't mean there aren't obstacles in the way, such as finances, etc, but there is a lot to be said about attitude...  Cheers, Kyra
